Headline: ARMC’s SALSA helps Latino population get active.
ARMC’s SALSA partnership helps the Latino population get active.

Traditionally known as a Latin dance, ARMC’s SALSA program takes a different approach to healthy living through movement. Through grant funding, SALSA is donating a fitness room to the Holt Sublimation, Inc. in Burlington. It’s the first expansion of the Salud Latina, Salud de Alamance program into the workplace. Founded in 2001, SALSA is a partnership between ARMC, Elon University and Alamance Community College. The goal is to raise awareness of diabetes among Alamance County’s Hispanic Population.
Cyra Kussman, diabetes educator at ARMC’s LifeStyle Center, says Holt was a natural choice for the fitness room because of its high number of Hispanic employees.

Kussman says, “We need to meet Hispanics where they work and live. They have nearly double the incidence of diabetes as the white population, often because they don’t seek help and aren’t diagnosed. Through the donation of the fitness room, we can help raise awareness about diabetes, provide resources for people at risk and intervention for people in need.”

Employees will have access to weights and cardiovascular equipment, with instructional posters available in Spanish. Kussman says Holt Sublimation, Inc. was also selected because an ARMC occupational health nurse already working there is very involved in disease management. Aside from the fitness equipment, the Holt program includes routine diabetes screenings, ongoing education and intervention if testing shows further medical attention is needed.

Holt employees aren’t the only ones able to take advantage of the SALSA exercise and diabetes prevention program. Three public sites were previously established to accommodate the Hispanic population through the SALSA program. For times and locations contact Hector Vaez at 278-6285 for more information.
