Alamance Regional Medical Center installs the world's first Somatom Sensation 40.
Siemens Computed Tomography System incorporates latest Technology

MALVERN, PA., May 17, 2005 – The world's first SOMATOM® Sensation 40 computed tomography (CT) scanner was recently installed at the radiology department of Alamance Regional Medical Center, Burlington, NC. It features Siemens revolutionary z-SharpTM technology, and enables acquisition of 40 slices per rotation with unprecedented image quality and the industry’s highest isotropic resolution of below 0.4 millimeter voxel size in clinical routine. The new system replaces the clinic’s SOMATOM Sensation 10.

The SOMATOM Sensation 40 incorporates Siemens proprietary z-Sharp Technology, which utilizes an electron beam that is accurately and rapidly deflected, creating two alternating and overlapping X-ray projections reaching each detector element. This doubles the scan information without a corresponding increase in dose, resulting in substantially enhanced spatial resolution and image quality. z-Sharp Technology firmly established a new benchmark for diagnostic excellence, as proven with more than 200 installations of the SOMATOM Sensation 64 systems worldwide.

“The Sensation 40 is performing very well. We are seeing the benefits of z-Sharp Technology with increased spatial resolution. Specifically, we achieve amazing results visualizing the abdominal vasculature on routine abdominal and pelvic studies. All chest exams are being performed at the 0.37 scan rotation with excellent speed and image quality”, says Geoffrey H. Browne, M.D., Burlington Radiological Associates.

With the combination of Speed4DTM Technology and a gantry rotation speed of 0.37 seconds, the SOMATOM Sensation 40 offers the highest spatial resolution and fastest scan speed in its class. Additionally, the SOMATOM Sensation 40 can adapt to the clinical necessities of users, capable of being upgraded on-site to a 64-slice system. This opens a new level of clinical benefits to hospitals, imaging centers and private practices alike.

With the SOMATOM Sensation 40, Siemens Medical Solutions completes its high-end product portfolio in computed tomography (CT). “With the introduction of the new SOMATOM Sensation 40, we continue the tradition of our SOMATOM Sensation product line to continually integrate cutting-edge imaging applications into daily clinical practice,” says Bernd Montag, PhD, President CT Division, Siemens Medical Solutions. Experts from Alamance Regional Medical Center will also participate in the final round of assessment and feedback essential for the successful launch of the new 40-slice system. Worldwide shipment of the SOMATOM Sensation 40 will start in July 2005.
